Ferocactus Histrix Cactus
A Spiky Sensation for Your Sunny Spot
Add a touch of desert drama to your space with the striking Ferocactus histrix, a classic barrel cactus known for its impressive size and beautiful spines. This cactus, also known as the Mexican Lime Cactus or Cone Cactus, features a spherical to cylindrical shape with prominent ribs and dense clusters of stout, colorful spines. Its compact form and architectural beauty make it an excellent choice for a sunny windowsill, rock garden, or any spot that needs a low-maintenance, high-impact plant. As it matures, it can produce a crown of stunning yellow or pink flowers, adding to its appeal.
Simple Care Instructions
- Light: Place in a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. A south-facing window or a bright, sunny spot is essential for its health and growth.
- Water: As a desert plant, it is drought-tolerant. Water thoroughly but infrequently. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. A good rule of thumb is to water every 2-4 weeks during the warmer months and reduce to once a month or less in the fall and winter. Overwatering is the biggest risk for this plant.
- Soil: Use a fast-draining soil mix specifically designed for cacti and succulents. A mix of sand, perlite, and potting soil will work well to ensure proper drainage.
- Fertilizer: Fertilize with a diluted, low-nitrogen fertilizer specifically for cacti and succulents during the spring and summer growing season. Fertilize no more than once a month.
- Temperature: This cactus thrives in warm temperatures. Protect it from frost, as it is not cold-hardy.
